In 2022, driven by the question “What do we want to leave behind for the future?”, Ayla was created.
Ayla is a character created by artist Po-Chieh Chen — a 12-year-old schoolgirl from the future. She travels across time to conduct field research in the past, documenting the people, places, and stories she encounters through writing and illustrations, which she brings back to share with her classmates in the future.
This character is not merely a fictional construct, but part of an ongoing artistic project. In Chen’s creative practice, Ayla is not only the protagonist of the narrative, but also a shift in perspective — a way of seeing the world through different lenses.
Ayla is the first embodied figure in Chen’s long-term exploration of the concept of “heteronyms”: a being with its own worldview and logic of action.
In terms of performance form, Chen defines Ayla is an artistic project,  merging physical theatre, dance, puppetry, and site-responsive sensory practice. Each iteration of the work evolves in response to the cultural context and spatial environment in which it is situated.
The puppet design and illustrated “homework” notebooks of Ayla are created by designer Yu-Fen Chen, while invited photographers contribute an additional visual layer — sometimes as third-person observers, sometimes as inner monologues — hovering between documentation and interpretation, guiding audiences into Ayla’s lived experiences.
The Ayla series weaves together elements of playfulness, documentary realism, and intertemporal observation. It also forms a unique language through which Ayla connects with the world. For Chen, Ayla is a real presence. Her existence and documentation represent the artist’s ongoing response to questions of identity, perception, and translation — a continual experimentation at the edge of art and life.
This work is ever-evolving, continuously generating, and intentionally open-ended.
Ayla’s story is unfolding in multiple forms — from theater (and site-specific performances) to picture books, from live acts to exhibitions — like a living project that gradually grows new dimensions over time.
